Translations

Translating is an art, as well as a difficult job. It is mistakenly believed that knowing the source and target language is enough to be a translator. Far from true!

What is the difference between interpreting and translating?

Translating means transposing what has been written or said in one language (source language) into another given language (target language). The profession of translator and interpreter are often confused because they belong to the same field even though they are different: translation consists in transposing a written text, while interpreting consists in transposing an oral speech. In other words, translators must draw up a document that renders the meaning of the original by respecting grammar and style rules of their readers’ language. Translators must first understand the statement expressed in the source language, grasp its meaning and nuances, and then re-express it in their own language as faithfully and naturally as possible. The work of the interpreter consists in pronouncing, in the language of the listener, a speech equivalent in content and intentions to the original speech. Unlike translators, interpreters are “visible”. They make instant communication possible: they “identify” with the speaker by speaking in the first person and returning the speaker’s ideas and beliefs with the same intensity and nuances. A faithful translation/interpretation respects both the intention of the author of the original text or speech, and the essence of the target language.

They must have excellent editorial qualities to produce documents that do not “taste like translation”. They must show rigour and accuracy in order to remain faithful to the original and convey the information it contains. Specialist translation generally requires terminological and documentary research, as well as consultation with experts in the field. Therefore, qualities such as critical sensibility, ability to find information and initiative are essential.

Translators are often pushed by tight deadlines and must therefore have good organisational and adaptive skills.
